Geothermal Services and Ground Source Heat Pumps

Aqua Drill, Inc. offers commercial and residential vertical drilling services, thermal grouting with a specialized Geo-Loop grouter, as well as horizontal trenching for ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems. These electrically powered systems tap the stored solar energy in the earth. These systems rely on the consistent temperatures of the earth to provide heating, cooling and hot water.

GSHPs are cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Both the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have endorsed the technology for both commercial and residential properties. They are used in new construction as well as retro-fits for older homes or businesses. GSHPs lower maintenance and operating costs, are durable and flexible in their design, and help conserve energy.

How GSHP Works

Ground source heat pumps can be categorized as having closed or open loops, and those loops can be installed in three ways: horizontally, vertically, or in a pond/lake. The types chosen depend on available land areas and the soil and rock types at the installation site. Both open and closed systems operate the same way. During the winter, the fluid collects heat from the earth and carries it through the system into the building. In the summer, the system reverses itself, cooling the building by pulling its heat and placing it in the ground. This process creates free hot water in the summer and delivers hot water savings in the winter.

GSHPs are cost effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly.Benefits of GSHP

  • Can heat and cool different parts of a building
  • Very quiet
  • Uses 50 to 80 percent less mechanical room space
  • Pipes have a 50-year life expectancy rate
  • All electric system eliminates multiple utilities
  • Ground heat exchanger is maintenance-free and lasts more than 40 years
  • No exposed equipment and no open flame, flammable fuel or dangerous fuel storage tanks

GSHP Savings

  • Competitive initial costs and lower lifecycle costs than most HVAC systems
  • Savings of 25 to 50 percent on energy consumption
  • Lower peak demand lowers operating costs
  • Water heated with waste heat from air conditioning at no cost in the summer and  gives substantial savings in the winter
  • Rebates and incentives are offered by many manufacturers, local utilities, and lending institutions.
  • Federal and State Tax incentives have been offered in the past, which assist with initial installation costs.

Environmentally Friendly Aspects

  • Conserve natural resources by providing climate control efficiently and lowering emissions
  • Minimize ozone layer destruction by using factory-sealed refrigeration systems, which rarely have to be recharged
  • Uses underground loops to transfer heat with no external venting or air pollution
